Off on holiday very soon to soak up the rays of sunshine? Well we are very jealous but yet so excited for you. We will share with you some of our top tips which we think you ought to have! These should help you choose the right sun care and protect your skin from sunburn.
* Choosing broad-spectrum skin care-: Helps to protect the skin from the two types of UV rays. UVB exposure is associated with sunburn while UVA radiation is associated with accelerated ageing and the risk of developing skin cancer in the future.
* Remember that sunburn is a sign of damage to the skin and the SPF rating on labels indicates the protection against UVB rays. For you to better understand, there are different categories of SPFs, from low (6 to 14), medium (15 to 29), high (30 to 50) and very high (50+). The protection you obtain from UVA should be at least a third of the labelled SPF, and can be seen on a product with a UVA logo. A rating is also used by the European Union indicating how much UVA light is absorbed by the skin in comparison to UVB. This means that even if a product has a high star rating, it may not give enough UVA protection if the SPF is low. The recommended product to choose by the British Association of Dermatology, has an SPF 30 with a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars, in addition to considering the right time of exposure of the day, protective clothing, and shade.
• Apply sun care generously on the face, neck, and all sensitive and uncovered areas such as the feet and hands that we sometimes forget about. This should be done 20 mins ahead of exposing your skin and make sure to top up as necessary. The British Association of Dermatology suggests to apply at least six full teaspoons (approximately 36 grams) to cover an average adult.
• Make sure toreapply the SPF cream at least every 2 hours, immediately after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
• Remember that sunburn not only affects those going on a beach holiday, but also affects skiers, climbers and trekkers at high altitude where the intensity of the light increases by stealth. The higher the altitude, the more concentrated the sun's UV rays. Each 300 metre gain in altitude adds 4% to the sun's intensity.
• Last but not least- Avoid being in the sunlight for too long between 10 and 4 pm when UV light is the strongest. If you are, then make sure you follow the steps as mentioned previously and make sure to wear a trendy hat and those fashionable sunglasses you’ve have recently bought!
