The Importance of Sunscreen

Our beauty needs in summer differ from those in winter. We may find our skin is oilier in summer, we tend to be outdoors in the sunshine more, and when the temperature rises we may find ourselves perspiring more.

Most of us love to be out in the sunshine, we’ll most likely be making the most of our gardens this year, but overexposure to UV rays can damage skin, leading to premature ageing. We all know we should be wearing sunscreen, but what to look for and how to use product effectively can be confusing. We recommend always looking for a broad spectrum product with a high SPF, which offers both UVA and UVB protection. Be sure to apply twenty minutes before going out in the sun, and ideally stay out of the sun’s rays between 11am and 4pm. 

A study has shown that on average we only apply 25-50% of the amount of sunscreen we are supposed to in one application. We should apply at least 30 ml of sunscreen with every all-over body application: the equivalent of a shot glass full. We should also re-apply at least every two hours,  even more frequently if hitting the (paddling) pool,  although most sunscreens these days offer some kind of water resistance.
